Dear brothers and sisters,

Our second reading this week is from the Letter to the Hebrews and gives us great advice. The author drives home the point about persevering in faith by fixing our eyes on Christ. In Hebrews 12:1-4, we read, “Let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before Him He endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken His seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how He endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1-3) I find these words very direct but also extremely encouraging. I know for myself if a leader is willing to do what he/she is asking me to do I am much more willing to follow. The main theme of the book of Hebrews is focused on the High Priesthood of Jesus Christ and is meant to encourage us as He has paved the way of perseverance for us and is at the right hand of the throne of God assisting us by His divine grace.

The Gospel also drives home this same point as well. Jesus knew that His passion death and resurrection would cause division among us. He knew some of us would not accept the call to holiness and embrace the gift of baptism which gives us the grace to allow our hearts to be set ablaze with the love of God. I think He used this imagery of fire in order to show how infectious the love of God can be. It is meant to give of us the image of hearts ablaze similar to a forest fire but the difference being that this fire of God’s love does not consume, but strengthens. Let us therefore follow the example of Jesus and strive to run the race well. In closing, these are the words of St. Francis De Sales, “We shall steer safely through every storm so long as our heart is right, our intention fervent, our courage steadfast, and our trust fixed on God.”
