Dear Parishioners,

While I was on retreat this summer, I discovered something that I think would be of great benefit to our parish. For the Bible study this Fall, I would like to use the book Bible Basics for Catholics by Professor John Bergsma. This summarizes the whole Bible over eight chapters and explains how it is relevant to the Catholic faith. I think Bible Basics for Catholics is a great introduction to the Bible because Professor Bergsma really explains the big picture of scripture in an accessible manner and often uses drawings to convey the truths of the faith in a memorable way. Many Catholics who are intimidated by scripture could benefit from this study and going through it in a group setting is an ideal way to learn scripture.

As the summary on the Amazon page puts it, “John Bergsma brings to his theology a combination of academic expertise, pastoral wisdom, and unique playfulness. Bible Basics for Catholics is based on Bergsma’s popular Introduction to Theology course at Steubenville. As a teacher, Bergsma has an uncanny ability to make complex ideas understandable and faith-inspiring while staying true to both Catholic teaching and biblical scholarship. Readers will begin to see the Christian understanding of salvation by walking through the Old Testament, going through the great stories of Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, the great kings and prophets of Israel, and culminating in the person and work of Jesus Christ.”

The study will begin on September 17th, meeting in the conference room at 5:30pm. (If enough people are interested in the study but want a different time, I can be open to that.) The study will last eight weeks, one for each chapter and each participant will be required to read the chapter and if possible the accompanying scripture passages for that chapter. Then, when we gather, I’ll facilitate discussion by summarizing the chapter, opening the floor for any questions people might have and then discussing the given review and discussion questions from the book. I imagine each session would be about an hour.

So, if you have any questions, feel free to look up the book. It’s available on Amazon.com and from other book sellers. Also, if you’re interested in the study and want to keep updated, feel free to contact me at toddcarterpriest@gmail.com. It is very important that all Catholics know the Bible because it is how we know of God’s plan of salvation for us all, and it allows us to appreciate the great work of Our Lord Jesus. God bless,

Father Carter

P.S. Remember Wednesday, August 15th is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Don’t forget to go to church!
